BRIEF
Vuka, an events space and Impact Hub, a co-working space are two warehouse buildings that share a common exterior courtyard. Located in south Austin, the two existing buildings are part of a larger collection of warehouses at The Yard St. Elmo, a master plan site designed by our offices. Essentially two empty metal shells, there was little we could utilize. We relied on clever engineering, ‘lighttouch’ MEP systems and sparingly added structural steel to support the interior elements like flooring, insulation, walls etc. An robust collaboration between our office, ThoughtBarn and McCray & Co. resulted in beautifully simple materials that compliment the spartan nature of the existing structure. Drawing inspiration from agricultural technology the palette is minimal and materials are technical and func- tional. A kinetic blend of weathering steel, translucent moveable plastic walls, off-the-shelf wood elements, neutral paint tones, and industrial style fixtures create an inviting and humble space.
